Fourth Term BYOD Updates and Reminders
Hello Artists!
It's almost fourth term! With that said, I'd like to take some time to discuss some BYOD updates and reminders. The Bring Your Own Device program is a priviledge here at WKMS and an excellent learning tool we have in place. BYOD has allowed us to eliminate a great deal of paper use in our classroom and I continue to find ways to utilize devices rather than old fashioned ways of teaching and learning. We use the class website, NeelsArtRoom.weebly.com and Edmodo.com on a regular basis to flip our classroom and spend more time in class working on our artwork. Hopefully the BYOD program has taught you ways to effectively use technology to enhance your learning, regularly communicate with your teacher/classmates, and take advantage of the convenient methods of finding or reviewing information needed to succeed in Art. With this wonderful opportunity, safe and appropriate use is something that needs to be discussed regularly.
Please read through all of the updates and reminders below:
1. Update: I recently purchased five laptop computers for our classroom. If you do not bring a device to class or own one, you are welcome to use the computers for research on an upcoming project, to look up images, complete discussion topics, take quizzes, and more.
2. Reminder: Always connect to the FCPS Guest Wifi. The network is filtered therefore spam and inappropriate content will not affect you. Using this feature will keep you safe and limit data usage on your wireless plans.
3. Reminder: Always be positive when commenting on your peers' artwork during Virtual critiques on Edmodo. Use appropriate and professional writing when posting as well. Negative comments can be misinterpreted.
4. Reminder: A.U.P Policy is in place here at WKMS. Review it here. (Mandatory). If you have questions direct message me on Edmodo.
5. Update: Digital security has become a concern. Never give your personal information to anyone. Never let other students use your devices without your permission. Never USE someone else's device without their permission. Do not click on unfamiliar emails or ads that pop up when using a search engine or app.
6. Update: When you are at home, take periodic breaks from your technology. Too much technology use can be as addictive as drugs or alcohol (this was a surprise to me as well). We have a healthy balance in our classroom so please continue to only use your devices when directed. You should also put them away (and on silent) at night and make sure you get plenty of sleep.

FLIPPLING the Art Classroom
You might be asking yourself what the title "Flipping the Art Classroom" means...
Glad you asked! With our shorter 47 minute classes this year, I want to maximize your studio time (the time in which you create artwork). WE ARE ARTISTS! Artists want to CREATE! In order to do this, classroom procedures are going to change. Drumroll please...
Lets discuss the "Flipped Classroom" model. Please take a moment to look at these images. Study them. Think about them. What do they mean to you? What could they mean for our classroom? (Click to enlarge).
Think you know what a "Flipped Classroom" is now? Let me explain further. Instead of lecturing about a particular artist, style, or technique, I will ask that you read about them, view slide shows, watch demonstration videos, look at past student samples, and more, ON YOUR OWN TIME (this is key). :) Many of you have devices or access to a home computer. All information will be located on our class website or blog. You can use Edmodo to communicate and collaborate with your classmates to LEARN the information. When you come to class we can have a brief discussion and then you're ready to START! Sound simple? It is, but it will take a bit of getting used to. In order for this to be successful, and to maximize studio time, you must be a self-motivated learner. This is a skill you will need in your other classes, in high school, in college, and the real world. :) Don't be afraid to ask questions about something you don't understand or something you want more information about. I'm always here and HAPPY to help.
If you do not have access to a computer, please let me know that you need to access my computer or a media center computer to catch up on the information. I can even let you look at it a day early (if it's ready to view).
Come to class next week prepared with any questions or concerns about this FLIPPED CLASSROOM model. :) I look forward to hearing what you think! Parents/guardians, I'd love to hear what you think as well. Write down questions with your student and we will discuss in class.

EDMODO in NeelsArtRoom
Edmodo is a wonderful resource for collaboration so let's use it! Here are some ways my students can use Edmodo in NeelsArtRoom. Please read the expectations first.
Expectation #1: You must write in a professional manner. Correct punctuation and complete sentences are a must.
Expectation #2: All posts must be school appropriate. Discipline steps will apply if posts are inappropriate.
Expectation #3: EDMODO is a NO MEANNESS ZONE! All comments and criticism must be POSITIVE.
Expectation #4: ALL POSTS MUST BE RELATED TO ART. :)
We are a team of artists in NeelsArtRoom. Let's collaborate on Edmodo in these ways:
1. Communicate with your classmates about projects, classwork (missed or misunderstood).
2. Virtual critiques (these will always begin IN class).
3. Post your own artwork (artwork completed on your own time). Your classmates May comment (just like we would during an in class critique to analyze and judge your piece.
4. Turn in sketchbook assignments. Take a photo and click "TURN IN"
5. Stay up to date on NeelsArtRoom blog posts. You are expected to read them when they are updated.

Issues with Edmodo?? PLEASE READ!
There have been several issues with signing onto Edmodo. I think the biggest issue is that students incorrectly type their username or password when REGISTERING. When they try to sign back in it is not recognized. To overcome this issue, please RE-REGISTER at the very beginning with a NEW USERNAME and NEW PASSWORD. You also can not enter the same email address. If this doesn't work, please contact me. Lindsay.Neel@fcps.org.

Using Edmodo in the Art Classroom
Using EDMODO in Visual Art
In this post, I hope to clarify, provide information, and answer your questions about Edmodo use in the Visual Art classroom. Visit Edmodo for more information.
I intend to use Edmodo to create a collaborative classroom community where we can communicate about assignments, preview techniques, view PowerPoint presentations, critique artwork, involve parents/family, and even turn in sketchbook assignments. The possibilities are endless with Edmodo. Getting signed in may be the most difficult part for someone who is unfamiliar with this website and app. I have attached a link HERE that should help explain the process of getting connected (you will be directed to my class website).
I want to create a 21st century art classroom where we collaborate and connect with each other outside of class as well to expand our creativity. This can be done using Edmodo. I highly encourage all of my students to become familiar with the tools and features on their own and come to class with questions. I plan to host ELT Q&A sessions for students having trouble or anyone who needs to use Edmodo on MY classroom computer due to issues with internet/computer access at home. This can take place during ELT (or during studio time if needed).

The time has come! Our first annual VIRTUAL ART SHOW is up and running!

The link will direct you to a variety of artwork and digital portfolios created by 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Make sure you scroll down to see all grades! We are very proud of our first virtual art show and will strive to make it EVEN better in the future.
Note: It is best to use Safari (mac browser), Chrome, or Firefox to view our website. Be patient if it loads a little slow. It's worth the wait! :)

BYOD! WE ARE CONNECTED!
Parents and students,
It's not too late to register a device (ANY DEVICE that can connect to the internet via the FCPS wifi). Students will be accessing my website for study tools and resources, communicating through Edmodo, building digital portfolios, building wikispaces and more.
Apps to download:
Edmodo
Socrative (Student)
DropBox
Any drawing app (drawing, painting, etc.)
Photo manipulation apps
Edmodo and Socrative can be accessed using the internet if downloading an app is not possible.
We are very excited to bring BYOD to WKMS. :)
